May Gurney named most considerate contractor

May Gurney has won the top award in East Sussex County Council’s Considerate Contractors scheme, which encourages contractors carrying out work on the public highway to work safely, consistently and considerately.

The aim of the scheme is to improve the general standard of work and minimise disruption to pedestrians and road users. The scheme recognises clean sites and equipment with better signs to keep people informed, and contractors who keep noise and dust to a minimum.

The top award, The Considerate Contractors Award, went to East Sussex Highways and May Gurney. Contractors winning other awards included Murphy, Morrison and Morgan Est.

Councillor Matthew Lock, lead member for transport and environment, said: “These results show how effective the Considerate Contractors Scheme has been in raising the standards of care and quality of roadworks in the county.

“Making our roads safer and better is something we take very seriously. We hope other contractors will join our scheme to drive up standards so there is less impact on the environment, and on the people in it.”
